Elsewhere in India: Jal Jungle Zameen
An immersive journey through water, forest and land.
Making its Australian premiere, Jal Jungle Zameen is a live audiovisual experience from Elsewhere in India (Murthovic and Thiruda) that blends electronic music, archival cinema, contemporary animation, live flute and spoken word into a rich world of sound and image.
Artists Murthovic and Thiruda are joined by award-winning bansuri virtuoso Vinod Prasanna and spoken word artist Vinny Lunar for a captivating performance that moves between history, memory and imagination.
Through animated stories, atmospheric soundscapes and striking visuals, the work traces connections between water, forests and land, exploring histories of resistance, cultural memory and our relationship with the natural world. Drawing on India’s ecological movements and traditions of interconnectedness, Jal Jungle Zameen transforms complex ideas into an immersive and deeply sensory experience.
At the heart of the work is an Indofuturist approach that blends ancestral knowledge with speculative futures. Moving between historical testimony and dreamlike imagery, the performance invites audiences to see familiar ideas in new ways and imagine different possibilities for the future.
Developed through Elsewhere in India’s ongoing collaboration with the BFI National Archive, the performance reinterprets footage from the India on Film: 1899-1947 collection, transforming archival images into a vivid contemporary artwork.
