“Monday Night Confessions” is a weekly show presenting original jazz/improvised music. Run out of Church Street Studios in Camperdown, Sydney, we acknowledge the Gadigal people of the Eora nation, and pay our respects to their elders past, present and emerging.

1st June 2026 - Harley Coleman Band // James McLean solo

Harley Coleman Band

Harley Coleman- Guitar
Oscar Bruten (MEL)- Saxophone
Sabine Tapia- Double Bass
Abby Constable - Drumset

Guitarist Harley Coleman and Saxophonist Oscar Bruten (MEL) recently travelled- accidentally, simultaneously - to Los Angeles, USA. After 10 days in the City of Angels, a mutual conclusion was reached: they should perform some good music together publicly, and soon.

Tonight, they join forces with the formidable Sabine Tapia on Bass and the incomparable Abby Constable on Drumset. Playing a smattering of tunes by Coleman, Bruten, and others, the four bring what they know and love about jazz music made in Australia, shaped by where they’re from - and where they’re headed.

James McLean solo

James McLean - drums

James McLean is one of Australia’s most distinctive improvising drummers, recognised with the 2016 Freedman Fellowship for Jazz and known for his work with ensembles including Spirograph Studies, Andrea Keller’s Five Below, The Eugene Ball 4tet, and Sam Gill’s Coursed Waters. Over the past decade James has pursued a solo practice underpinned by his PhD research in embodied music cognition: a deep inquiry into the relationship between movement and sound that shapes everything he does on stage. His solo discography includes three albums for solo drums – Counter Clockwork (2015), Oscillator (2018), and Interstitial (2021).

For this rare Sydney performance, James will be performing new material currently in development ahead of recording in late 2026.
