Clare Cooper: guzheng
Jean-Philippe Gross: electronics

NEVERS (Clare Cooper - Jean-Philippe Gross)

A coming together of two acclaimed improvisers, this intercontinental duo finds common ground between Clare’s Chinese guzheng and Jean-Philippe’s mixing desk, lo-fi microphones, electroacoustic devices, and localised speaker system, producing a compelling blend of acoustic delicacy and electronic disruption which sometimes sounds like a fire in an electronic flea market, other times like the amplification of an insect funeral march…

Clare Cooper (Sydney)

Clare is the co-founder of the NOWnow Festival (2001), Splinter Orchestra (2002), Berlin Splitter Orchester (2009), and Frontyard Projects (2016). As a musician, she is ears-deep in a seemingly eternal attempt to mimic cicada and magpie using sticks and strings (harp and guzheng). Her pieces have been featured on Australia’s ABC, Germany’s SWR, and the UK’s BBC and have been published by Mikroton (Russia), Splitrec (Australia), High Zero (USA), and Eich (France). Jim Denley wrote a piece on Clare’s work in Liquid Architecture’s Disclaimer Journal that does a wonderful job of summing up what you might hear at this gig.

Jean-Philippe Gross (Strasbourg, France)
Composer and improviser, Jean-Philippe Gross is a self-taught musician. In concert, he plays
with a dedicated feedback system and in the studio, he continues his research with a “Serge
modular system”. At the crossroads of electronic and instrumental music, J-P develops a physical
relationship with sound, playing with ruptures and acoustic phenomena. Never locked into any
kind of system, he allows himself extremes to take advantage of a wide range of possibilities, and pays particular attention to timbre, grain and sound quality, even when rough.
He has composed music for dance and performance, as well as for contemporary ensembles
such as Ensemble Dedalus. In concert, he collaborates with Marc Baron, Jean-Luc Guionnet,
Clare Cooper and Stéphane Garin and with the choreographer Camille Mutel.
He co-founded the Fragment concert series in Metz in 2001. In 2019, he created the record label Eich.
