Saxophone Special - Plays the music of Steve Lacy

Featuring special guest Sandy Evans

Phillip Johnston: alto saxophone Peter Farrar: alto, soprano saxophones Sandy Evans: tenor saxophone James Loughnan: baritone saxophone

The evening will consist of a program of Lacy tunes arranged for saxophone quartet by Phillip Johnston, with guest Sandy Evans.

Johnston has been performing Lacy’s music since the late 1970s. Both of his 90s Black Saint recordings contain Lacy tunes, and his 2010s band with Melbourne pianist Jex Saarelaht, Tight Corners, played Monk, Lacy and Herbie Nichols. He has continued to obsessively arrange and re-arrange Lacy’s solo tune ‘Hemline’ for different ensembles for the last 40 years. It will be played on this gig of course.

Tone Bird

Melanie Herbert (violin, singing bowls) and Romy Caen (harmonium, electronics) – the last five years have worked together in concerts and recording sessions.

Together they use free frequencies - at times softly embedded in the world and other times bright and chaotic.
