Silent film and live music - Limite (1931) and Worlds Only
Join us for a special screening of *Limite *(1931), an astonishing landmark of early Latin American cinema with a newly commissioned live score.
Directed by filmmaker Mário Peixoto at the age of 21, *Limite *has been acclaimed by the likes of Orson Welles and David Bowie. Three castaways share stories of their past lives while adrift on a lifeboat off the coast of Rio de Janeiro. Striking camera angles and flashbacks conjure a mood between dream and reality, a journey into the mind and out to sea. Described by legendary Brazilian filmmaker Glauber Rocha as the ‘Mona Lisa of our cinema’, *Limite *was scarcely seen in the decades following its premiere, existing as a legend until its belated restoration. Originally set to the music of Erik Satie, Claude Debussy and Igor Stravinsky, the film will be accompanied live by Worlds Only, a musical supergroup based between Sydney and Barcelona.
About the ensemble
Named after Megan Alice Clune’s *World’s Only *zine, Worlds Only create site-specific works that exist in the liminal space between classical, experimental and improvisation. The septet consists of Alister Hill (guitar), Darren Lesaguis (spoken word), Jenny Trinh aka Wytchings (electronics/vocals), Justin Tam aka Tzekin (saxophone), Mara Schwerdtfeger (viola/vocals), Reginald Harris (bass) and Thomas William Smith aka T.Morimoto (electronics).
