After making their debut performance at Monday Night Confessions in February 2023, BELIEVE have gone on to become Sydney’s torch bearers for improvised music making, playing dozens of concerts across the city.

Tonight’s performance sees the band reunite with outstanding vocal improviser Sonya Holowell, after their astonishing collaboration at last year’s Strata festival at Phoenix Central Park.

Sasha Gavlek (TAS)

Sasha Gavlek is a contemporary bassist, bandleader, and composer based in Nipaluna/Hobart, with a love for alternative jazz, folk, and improvisation. In 2022 Gavlek released their debut album, On Second Thoughts, with the Sasha Gavlek Quartet. Focussing heavily on atmosphere and interpersonal connection, Gavlek’s compositions often utilize improvisation played atop repetitive motifs, exploring themes of personal struggles and growth, their pieces allowing plentiful space for the personal touch of the players.
