Laura Chislett ~ flute
Australian flute player Laura Chislett is active as a performer, educator and recording artist across a wide range of musical styles. Her recorded repertoire ranges from JS Bach and Lili Boulanger, to Brian Ferneyhough, Reza Vali, improvisation and beyond.
Laura studied at the Sydney Conservatorium, with Margaret Crawford, Michael Scott and Richard Toop. She played in the Sydney Youth Orchestra and the Australian Youth Orchestra. Much of the ’80s were spent in Europe studying and performing. Collaborations have resulted in the release of ten CDs so far.
Laura’s most recent CD, on the UK label ‘Métier Divine Art’, of improvisations with the polymath musician Edward Cowie, was described recently in Music Web International as “sensuous, inventive and often fantastic”.
Satsuki Odamura ~ koto
Satsuki is a pioneer of the traditional Japanese instrument, the koto, performing and teaching in Australia for over 30 years. She originally trained at the Sawai Koto School in Tokyo with the legendary koto players Tadao and Kazue Sawai. Since moving to Australia, she has inspired a number of Australian composers to write for the koto, and she has collaborated with notable musicians from other genres, including jazz, classical and other styles. Satsuki believes that artists with no previous knowledge of the koto are able to create exciting new directions and dimensions for the instrument.
Satsuki has released four of her own albums in collaboration with Australian musicians and, in the process, has found new and exciting contexts for this traditional Japanese instrument. Her most recent album Pearl of May was released in 2023.
