Strata III - A Festival of Jazz and New Music

“The third edition of the Strata festival at Phoenix Central Park represents an annual cross-section of the finest improvisers and creative music makers in Australia. Six sets showcasing the diversity and depth of music that stands outside of commercial considerations, in pursuit of community, truth and experience through sound and the language of improvisation.
This year features two premieres of new music; by Berlin-based Melbourne composer Claire Cross, and from 2023 Freedman Fellow Phillippa Murphy-Haste, a one-off collaboration by Sydney collective BELIEVE and vocal improviser Sonya Holowell, the beguiling new trio HEAPS GRASS, Brisbane pianist Erik Griswold’s trio Anatomical Heart, and Sydney underground heroes Showa 44.
As the curator, and as a performer and member of this community, I am very proud to once again have the opportunity to present this vital music in the beautiful Phoenix Central Park, and hope you can join us for Strata III.”
