Nine of Australia’s leading composers and sound artists have been commissioned by This Sonic Life to create works that aim to embrace the listener and sonically explore the sensation of person-to-person contact that triggers emotional well-being, similar to that of a hug. The goal of the “Sonic Hugs” project is to bring focus to the need for more social connectedness and cohesion in our modern society.

CAT HOPE “One of Australia’s most exciting and individual creative voices…a remarkable composer.” - Gramophone Magazine UK, 2017. Cat is director of the award-winning ensemble Decibel, and her compositions have been recorded for Australian, German and Austrian national radio. She has been awarded numerous prizes including the APRA/AMC Award for Excellence in Experimental Music.linkFor more information

EVE KLEIN Eve Klein is an award-winning composer, mezzo-soprano, sound artist and academic. She designs large-scale, immersive art music experiences for festivals. Klein’s music has been described as “contemporary music at its most relevant – simultaneously inward and outward focused in addressing the challenge of its existence and its capacity to produce something great” (Cyclic Defrost) For more information   COLIN BLACK “… amongst the most significant Australian creative artists of his generation, a composer/sound artist who has created a significant body of important work which spans installation, sound art, fìlm, radiophonic works, and beyond, with many of these works having gained international attention."  - John Davis, CEO Australian Music Centre, 2011 Colin is an internationally acclaimed composer/sound artist having won many awards including the 2015 New York Festivals Award and the 2003 Prix Italia Award. JIM DENLEY One of Australia’s foremost improvisers of new music, known for his improvisations on wind instruments and electronics. His radio work Collaborations won the 1989 Prix Italia. He was a member of the group Machine for Making Sense and the medieval music group Sinfonye. Jim has performed in Australia, Europe, Japan and the US with artists such as Chris Abrahams, Clare Cooper, Keith Rowe, Joel Stern, Robbie Avenaim, Jon Rose, John Butcher, Otomo Yoshihide, Fred Frith, Phil Niblock and many more, For more information   ROS BANDT Ros is an internationally acclaimed sound artist. Over four decades she has pioneered new forms of sonic art, site specific ritual performance in ancient world heritage sites and audience interactive installations. An expert historical wind player and cross-cultural collaborator, her work has been published by Wergo, New Albion, EMI, Neuma, Efficient Space and Move. For more information   DAVID CHESWORTH David an Australian-based interdisciplinary artist and composer. Known for his experimental music, he has worked solo, in post-punk groups Essendon Airport and Whadya Want?, in contemporary electronic ensembles and experimental performance. He was the winner of the 2006 Classical Music Awards for Best Instrumental Work of the Year. He has also created installation and video artworks with collaborator Sonia Leber, such as Zaum Tractor included in the 56th Venice Biennale in 2015. For more information   STEPHEN ADAMS Stephen studied music composition with Peter Sculthorpe and Richard Vella and has been active as a composer and performer across a wide range of genres for many years. ROBERT SAZDOV Robert’s compositions and productions have received many prizes and awards from various organisations and institutions including the Pierre Schaeffer Competition, Musica Nova Competition, Sonic Arts Awards, Bourges International Competition, Just Plain Folks Music Awards and the Audio Engineering Society. For more information   CLAIRE PANNELL (A.K.A. FURCHICK) Furchick challenges herself to make musical instruments from toys, household items and homemade automata. She performs an experimental live sound at the crossover between art and science. In her home studio, Furchick incorporates field recordings from the natural environment, living things and every day urban sounds. For more information

The collection of Sonic Hugs compositions are scheduled for broadcast internationally on the Radia.fm network (broadcast on stations in Europe, UK, Canada, Australia and USA) in the weeks following this launch, and will be presented at The Museum of Broken Relationships (Zagreb), New Adventures in Sound Art (NAISA) in Canada and on Austrian Radio (ÖRF).
