1st set: Alister Spence & Tony Buck

Alister Spence - piano Tony Buck - drums

Alister and Tony love improvising. They share a fascination with submerged rhythm, oblique extended forms, entwined interplay, and sound for its own sake. As contemporaries their musical histories have run in parallel, and occasionally intersecting, for the last thirty years. They have been enjoying re-connecting musically.

Tony Buck is regarded as one of Australia’s most creative and adventurous exports, with vast experience across the globe. As a drummer, percussionist, improviser, guitarist, video maker and producer, he has been involved in a highly diverse array of projects but is probably best known around the world as a member of the trio “The Necks”.

Apart from The Necks he has played, toured or recorded with Jon Rose, Otomo Yoshihide, John Zorn, T. Cora, Phil Minton, Haino, Even Parker, The Machine for Making Sense, Lee Ranaldo, Ne Zhdall, The EX, Clifford Jordan, Ground Zero …

Alister Spence has established a reputation as a pre-eminent creative force in jazz and improvised music in Australia. The Alister Spence Trio has enjoyed critical acclaim, being nominated twice for Best Australian Jazz Album at the ARIA Awards (2004/2007). Their 7th release, Not Everything but Enough was voted in ‘Top 10 Jazz Albums 2017’ in Music Magazine, Japan.

He has also toured and recorded with internationally recognised improvisers in Japan, Scotland, Sweden, and the US, including Myra Melford, and long-standing musical collaborations with Raymond MacDonald and Satoko Fujii.

“surprisingly, transportingly beautiful… Tony Buck’s thinking on his craft has uncovered something and it’s something enormous…” Brisbane’s 4ZZZ

“This is the sound of genuine discovery, founded upon decades of experience but unfettered by habit.” Bill Meyer, Dusted Magazine, US (review of intelsat: Spence/Fujii)

2nd set: Delay 45

Tom Avgenicos - trumpet Carl Dewhurst - guitar Roshan Kumarage - piano Dave Quinn - bass Ashley Stoneham - drums

Delay 45 focus on generating contrasting sound worlds though songs, loops and colours that are weaved and morphed together through improvisation. The band has been drawing attention ever since their inception in 2018, touring internationally and receiving praise from legendary pianist Mike Nock; “A band to watch!”.

Their debut release ‘big ears’ is a through-composed suite of eight contrasting tracks that showcase the band’s ability to veer seamlessly between structure and spontaneity. This performs premieres a new suite of music featuring legendary guitarist Carl Dewhurst.
